Unlike guidebooks that try to offer a comprehensive list
of establishments, few of which the authors have ever visited, we only mention our favorite,
highly-recommended places.
Bocas del Toro
In Bocas the restaurants are expensive, you can save money by
finding a place with a kitchen, even if it means paying a little more. La
Veranda is a lovely mid-range option owned by Heather a former nurse from
Canada. The place is simple but decorated with great taste. Rooms open onto a
deck surrounded by flowers and furnished with tables, chairs and a sofa.
Birdwatchers will be delighted by the variety tropical birds (including a few
species of hummingbirds) which feed on the flowers surrounding the deck. Have
a seat on the sofa, try some of Heather's home-made chocolate and the birds
will come. If you plan a trip to Bocas, make a point to stay at La Veranda.
Pedasi
Just before you arrive in the center of town you will pass a
hedge-row on the right and a sign for Dim's Hostal. Look no further for a
place to stay. Mirna the hostess will treat you right. Rooms in the $20 range
are cozy with private bath and ceiling fan and include breakfast. There is a
lovely patio out back and a flower garden livens up the yard. She will make
special meals on request and she can arrange tours to local attractions.
