The Akha originated in the Chinese province of Yunnan, where the majority of the group still lives however they have migrated southward over several centuries. In the mid-1800’s, numerous groups moved into Kentung State in Myanmar while others moved on to Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and India. Akha are also known as Kaw or Ekaw in Thailand or as Kha Kaw in Laos. In China and Vietnam, they are included in the Hani group, whose name may derive from 'Za Nyi',
their name for themselves.
