Kanzashi are hair ornaments, used in traditional Japanese hairstyles.
Kanzashi came into wide use especially during the Edo period. Artisan
started to compete to create better products as demand increased among
women. Today they are often crafted of hard wood and decorated with gold
paint. Finely crafted kanzashi were often handed down from mother to
daughter as heirlooms.
