Kanzashi are hair ornaments, used in traditional Japanese hairstyles. Kanzashi came into wide use especially during the Edo period. Artisan started to compete to create better products as demand increased among women. Today they are often crafted of hard wood and decorated with gold paint. Finely crafted kanzashi were often handed down from mother to daughter as heirlooms.
