On market day shoe-shine boys can be found in even the most remote villages. The few cents earned may make a big difference to his family. Here a young boy from a "well-to-do" family gets his boots buffed.

As in many developing countries, in Guatemala well-maintained leather shoes are symbols of social class. Even the poorest men may occasionally pay for the service just to present a facade of  status.
