Country: Guatemala   /   Village: Joyabaj
Ethnic Group: Maya   /   Feature: Markets

The Guatemalan diet is based on starchy carbohydrates. When not eating corn they eat potatoes. The general lack of stature among the Maya of the Altiplano can be attributed directly to this limited diet.

Here a woman weighs out a purchase of potatoes using a simple balance scale. Typical of the women from Joyabaj, she wears a dark huipil decorated with large, brightly-colored, concentric circles that radiate out from the collar.
