Children are sacred to the Mentawai. They believe that a child is the best gift a couple can ever receive. Fathers spend as much time with their children as mothers do. When I told them that in some countries some fathers could not spend more than thirty minutes a day with their children, they replied that they would never want to trade places, not for all the goods and money in the world.
