This village elder grew up in the heart of the Darien jungle with little or no contact with the outside. He never received any education. He speaks no Spanish. The concepts of development, market economy and western culture seem lost on him. He was curious and would come and sit with us, observe the cameras and computer gear, smile and occasionally gesture. And then he would disappear into the jungle for days carrying nothing more than a machete and his knowledge of the natural world.
