The small gold nose ring glinting in the sun identifies this two-year-old girl as a Rye. As she grows older, she will wear as much gold as the family can afford. If she achieves true success -- marrying into a richer family -- in her older age she may wear as much gold as the skin of her nose can support. Some older women must cock their heads to the side when they eat so that their long heavy jewelry doesn't interfere with the food.
