Nepal

The Rye people inhabit the lower valleys beneath Everest. The communities are very poor and many adults and most children go barefoot. The girl on the right wears a bedraggled version of the Nepali traditional dress with an overlapping flap tied at the shoulder and the hip.

These villagers survive on the milk of their cows and yaks. They produce butter and yogurt, and subsist from a simple diet of potatoes, tsamnpa flour, and rice.
